It has become a massive year for Cryptocurrency so far, but a number of familiar problems continues to disrupt the industry, including questions for the environmental impact of crypto mining.

In an effort to solve problems with traditional mining, and provide small scale small seats on the table once again, the new type of cryptocurrency has appeared that it uses storage capacity that is contrary to valued strength.

TechRadar Pro talks with Jason M. Feist, VP Products & Solutions Engineering appears in Seagate storage companies, to hear more about the cryptocurrency-centric storage and opportunities they can make.

What is the Cryptocurrency centric storage and how it works?

For most people, Crypto has been identical to Bitcoin. Those who have several Bitcoin Savvy know this technology depends on “work evidence” to validate transactions. This requires significant CPU and GPU resources. Other blockchains pursue different roles using different validation methods. Increasingly, “Proof of Space”, which validates operations with the storage capacity of excess participants, provides a more green and more full approach with the opportunity for organizations to obtain income from their IT infrastructure.

Storage centric blockchains are indeed seen as an alternative that is more energy efficient for blockchains that depend on proof of work. This is the case because the currency activated storage does not have a hungry transaction. According to the United States data center energy report, storage usually only amounts to 11% of the data center power.

Examples of Crypto centric storage are FileCoin Lab protocols. It uses “Proof of Space and Time” for Blockchain validation and also a gift miner in the currency file. Storage miners make their capacity unused available for networks. Given the large number of capacities promised to Filecoin, mining entities can archive a lot of data, which frees its local capacity for more critical use. Chia is another example of a storage-centric currency.

How do storage companies try to overcome the increase in demand for high-capacity drives carried by Crypto?

It is true that Seagate is now experiencing a strong demand. Through strong operating principles, we manage risks to minimize supply disorders and ensure resilience. We will fulfill the immediate customer and authorized distributor commitment to the June 2021 quarter. We continue to work with our customers to understand requests and adjust the appropriate plans.
