Yes, VW Taos Basecamp is the concept for now. But we have a strong feeling it won’t remain an old concept. It seems inspired by the positive response from the concept of Atlas Basecamp in 2019, the Volkswagen design team in Oxnard, California, understood the concept of Taos Basecamp as a more outdoor and rough version of the standard VW Taos crossover.
“Many roam outdoors and need vehicles with innovation to accommodate their active lifestyles,” said Robert Gal, a senior manager of performance and accessories in Volkswagen of America.
The concept of Atlas Basecamp VW debuted at the New York International Auto Show and walked to Sema Show 2019. In less than a year, Volkswagen began an exclusive range of off-road basecamp accessories for Atlas SUVs. Did you pay attention to the pattern here?
The Off-Road Atlas Basecamp package consists of exterior elements that are bespoke like a bumper guard, textured fenders, and new wheels and tires, for some names. Taos Basecamp gets similar body accessories such as the thule canyon xt roof basket, off-road led lights from steel design, new slippage plate, and sturdy fender flares.
“Taos is a great compact SUV since the beginning,” said Reto Brun, Director of the Volkswagen California design center. “Following the design strategy we made with the concept of Atlas Basecamp, Taos Basecamp has a Waimea Blue paint with a gloss black trim element and matte black hood and roof.”
VW also added bright orange accents on special basecamp badges, side decals, and mirror lid. Underneath, the concept of Taos Basecamp has raised suspension with H & R Springs, the 17-inch MX traverse wheels are unique by Fifteen52, and Falken Wildpeak A / T trail tires. And like Atlas Basecamp, a badging and styling package in Taos Basecamp is provided by air design.
There are no changes under the hood. Taos 2022 VW is still powered by 1.5 liters of motorbikes injected by four turbocharged cylinders pumping 158 horsepower and 184 pound of torque. The front wheel drive model gets eight automatic speeds, while Taos AWD has a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.
And even though it has a turbo engine, VW Taos, which is all new is a fuel rabbit. FWD Taos reached 28/36/31 MPG which was confirmed by EPA on unleaded fuel, beating similar competitors such as Mazda CX-30 and Audi Q3. Meanwhile, Taos AWD with DCT 7-speed reaches 25/32/28 MPG.
The concept of Taos Basecamp will also debut VW Gentex Homelink Bluetooth that allows a frameless mirror with an integrated compass. The 2022 Volkswagen Taos arrived at this June dealer with a base price starting at $ 22,995 (Taos FWD) and $ 24,445 (Taos AWD), while the basecamp accessories will most likely be available next year or faster. The concept of Taos Basecamp is currently on display in Helen, Georgia, until May 23.
