It’s been years since the GTV hacker team revealed a method to get root access to Roku devices, but now they operate under Exploitee.rs banners and once again show cracked software for streaming hardware.
According to the developer Rootmyroku Llamasoft, exploitation takes advantage of a pair of vulnerabilities to allow persistent jailbreak roots. It must work on Rokuos v9.4.0 with a wifi realtek chip, which includes “almost all” Roku TV and several boxes. Rokuos 10 blocks this particular method, but you might not have received an update.
Obviously this is useful for fans who want more control over their boxes, but it does indeed show some security issues, and on the GitHub page, the developer begged Roku to follow other company leaders in creating a bug gift program. It will pay people who find this exploitation, give them more reasons to find and highlight them so they can be repaired, rather than allowing all types of evil activities.
