With summer coming to an end in the northern hemisphere, the days are getting shorter, and the temperatures are getting cooler as winter approaches. However, that doesn’t mean that we can’t still have fun in the great outdoors – quite the opposite, in fact! When winter arrives, and the snow starts falling, there are all sorts of fun activities to enjoy outside. If you’re looking for some inspiration, here are just a few ideas to get you started. No matter where you live or what you like to do, there’s bound to be at least one suggestion that suits you!
Ice skating
If you live in a big city, there’s almost certainly going to be an open-air ice rink set up around the winter season. Often there will also be music, food and drink stands, and even fairground rides in the surrounding area, so you can make a whole day or evening of it.
Skiing and snowboarding
For those lucky enough to live within easy travel distance of a ski slope, skiing and snowboarding are ideal winter sports to try your hand at. If you’ve never done it before, start off with some lessons to build your confidence – and remember to wear a helmet.
Sledding
Got a hill nearby that’s not too steep and doesn’t have too many trees? When it gets snowy, grab a sled and head out! This can be a great family activity for those with kids. Go feet first for safety and avoid icy slopes.
Shoveling your neighbor’s driveway
Ok, shoveling snow might not be the most fun winter activity, but it is the season of goodwill, so why not do something nice for your neighbor and help clear their driveway? Snowblowers will make the task much easier, or you can grab some friends and make short work of it together. People are sure to appreciate the gesture.
Building snow statues
This one is a classic, and for a good reason. No matter how old or skillful you are, you can get creative and make some truly amazing sculptures out of snow. Once you’ve mastered the traditional snowman, why not try your favorite animal or cartoon character? The main factor is to have fun with it!
Stargazing
Due to the long, dark nights, winter can be a fantastic time of year to go stargazing. Just remember to wrap up extra warm because you need clear skies, and that means it will get chilly! When the conditions are good, you can spot plenty of constellations and maybe a few satellites – or even shooting stars. Bring a thermos of hot cocoa, a blanket, and lots of layers!
Visiting a winter market
Winter markets begin to spring up in many towns and cities around the end of November and can be a festive way to spend an afternoon or evening. You can shop for souvenirs and gifts, snack on street food, indulge in hot chocolate or mulled wine, and sometimes play games or enjoy live music too. It’s guaranteed to get you in the holiday spirit – especially if it snows!
